Summer is rapidly approaching and with it the desire to lounge about in the sun feeling its warm rays on your skin. While this is a lovely way to spend an afternoon, there can be consequences. (Shut up: I am totally going to harsh your mellow.) Over exposure to the sun in the short run can mean burns; in the long run, skin cancer.

Before the world is overrun with Dala Kumara-Yaka, take a little time to learn how prevent skin damage now.
Of course, we know to use sunscreen but did you know that just applying a thin layer doesn't provide as much protection? Yes: the less you use, the less protection you get. Really slather (or spray) that stuff on. And don't forget to reapply! Summer fun means sweating. Sweat is essentially salty water. Stock up now though: in the post-apocalyptic world, sunscreen will probably be a bit hard to come by.
If for some reason you don't run out to your local pharmacy, supermarket, corner store, or mega-store, having a few tips and tricks to keep you safe without chemical protection will come in handy.
- Clothing, especially darker colors made from a tightly woven fabric, helps protect skin from UVB rays. Some rays will get through the fabric though.
- Hats help protect the head and face from the sun's harmful (yet delightfully warm) rays.
- Shades look cool and help protect the eyes and skin around them.
- Stay out of direct sunlight whenever possible.
- Avoid going out at the sun's zenith.

Interesting article. One thing we do is make sure to always have sunscreen in our vehicles and all bug out bags. That and at least two pairs of dark glasses.
ReplyDeleteThat is an awesome tip. Thanks!
